Maths
Students access maths daily and it is taught throughout the curriculum through functional and meaningful learning experiences. We aim to provide opportunities to develop mathematical skills across all curriculum areas and throughout the day.
Maths
Why – Purpose and Rationale
Maths develops the thinking, independence and problem-solving that underpin life beyond school. Students learn about quantity, pattern, sequencing, time, and measurement—all essential for functional independence and curiosity about the world.
What – Core Content
This includes:
Number sense, sequencing and pattern
Time, money, shape and space
Matching, sorting, comparison and estimation
Cause and effect, reasoning and practical application
Maths is presented in real-life and sensory contexts, matched to developmental level.
How – Teaching and Learning Approaches
Engagement: cause-effect play, puzzles, noticing patterns
Environments: number-rich classrooms, routines with timing, sensory maths zones
Experiences: cooking (measuring), shopping, games, construction, calendar routines
Pathway examples:P1: matching objects, sensory number play
P2: using timers, measuring, cooking
P3: budgeting, following a schedule, sequencing events
All tasks support communication, motor planning and reasoning.
How Well – Assessment and Progress
Fox Hollies Maths Progression Frameworks
A2E Maths Toolkit (semi-formal learners)
EHCP outcomes (cognition, independence)
Evidence for Learning – observations, work in books, cross-curricular evidence (e.g. cooking, enterprise)
